On Wednesday Erin from Project Energize came in and taught us a traditional Maori game 'Ki Maui, ki Matau' using the mau rakau.
We stood in a circle and each person had to hold a mau rakau (long stick) on our fingertips.
Then Erin gave the instruction "ki maui" or "ki matau" and we had to move in that direction to get the person's rakau beside us before the mau rakau fell to the ground.
We definitely had to take on the Taniwha challenge and 'participate and contribute' for the game to be successful. We also needed to know our left from our right, which meant we had to 'think' as well.
Here are some photos of the game in action.
Then we had a little group competition...
and then there were two
VICTORY!
